A little about our little town Moe: Approximately 135 kilometres east of Melbourne is the city of Moe, set in the Latrobe Valley and the Gippsland area of Victoria. With a population of 18,000 people, Moe is one of the three key urban centres of the Latrobe Valley, with Traralgon and Morwell.
The Ganai Aboriginal people were the original inhabitants until the first European squatters arrived in the 1840s. The population began to expand after the arrival of the selectors in the 1860s, and the formation of the Gippsland railway line. In 1878, with the arrival of the first train from Melbourne, a commercial and agricultural centre developed, and by 1938, there were 750 residents.
After the First World War, the State Electricity Commission developed the brown coal fields, bringing in a huge flood of people, taking the population to approximately 17,000 by 1986. Moe was declared a city in 1963, and in 1995, the city was amalgamated with the Traralgon Shire, the Morwell Shire, and the Traralgon City, to form the Latrobe Shire, which is now called the City of Latrobe.
Because of the marshy nature of the region, the town was originally called ‘The Moe’ or the ‘Mowie’ from an Aboriginal word which apparently describes the terrain.
Moe is now regarded as a stopover and navigation point for tourists on their way to Erica, the famous goldfields township of Walhalla, Mount Baw Baw and the Walhalla Goldfields Railway.
In 1852, there was a minor gold discovery around the small settlement at Narracan Creek which was a stopover en route to the Walhalla goldfields. In 1862, a Post Office was opened.
Primary Schools in the Moe district consist of the Albert Street Primary, the South Street Primary, Elizabeth Street Primary, St Kieran’s Primary (Catholic), Barringa Special School, St Mary’s Primary (Catholic), Newborough Primary, and Newborough East Primary. Two secondary schools are the Lowanna Secondary College and the Lavalla Catholic College.
Located close to the outdoor pool on the eastern end of Vale Street is the Olympic Park which is used for the sport of soccer. The Olympic Pool in Moe is next to the Olympic Park Reserve, owned by the Latrobe City Council. A six-lane indoor heated pool with a unisex spa at one end of the complex, and at the other end a sauna, is the heart of the Latrobe local leisure centre. The centre also consists of a gymnasium with state-of-the-art pin-loaded equipment.
